SUMMER REGIONAL MEETING

SATURDAY, JULY 20th

QUALCOMM STADIUM PRESS BOX

Our Chapter’s traditional summer regional meeting will be held at the Qualcomm Stadium Press Box (press level 1st base side):

§        Saturday, July 20th

§        9:30 a.m. until about 1:00 p.m. –1:30 p.m.

Members of the Arizona Flame Delhi Chapter and Los Angeles Allan Roth Chapter have been invited.  The Arizona Diamondbacks will be in town that evening against the Padres so we expect that some of our out of town SABR members will join us.

PLAN  TO  JOIN  US,  too!

The program is not final yet, but we have confirmation from Charles Harrington Elster, co-host of the KPBS show “A Way with Words,” that he will attend and speak on the subject of “The Language of Baseball.”  We also expect that our 1st annual Boynton Baseball Research Award student winner will attend and present his/her paper.  Also, Padres Bench Coach Rob Picciolo will join us.  Finally, we are always interested in research, so let us know of if you have any that might be of interest for a presentation.

RECAP OF MAY 4th

JOINT MEETING with LOS ANGELES ALLAN ROTH CHAPTER

at the LAKE ELSINORE DIAMOND

On Saturday, May 4th, a joint meeting with the Los Angeles Allan Roth Chapter was held at the Lake Elsinore Diamond ballpark, the home of the Lake Elsinore Storm.  This meeting was a 6-year reunion of sorts since the last joint meeting was held in May 1996 at the same ballpark.  About 60 members and guests were in attendance in the meeting organized by Roth Chapter President Steve Roney (with the able assistance of Sharla Roney, Storm Director of Group Sales, and Steve’s daughter).

The meeting featured Storm Manager, George Hendrick, who engaged in Q&A for over 75 minutes.  Presentations included Bob Timmermann on “The Padres/Dodgers ‘Rivalry’ " and Kevin Saldana on “The History of Professional Baseball in Lake Elsinore.”  The raffle of a large photo of Babe Ruth and Ted Williams (donated by Bob Boynton) was won by Dodgers’ fan Steve Shewmaker, while Jay Walker won the trivia contest (contributed by Joe Naiman).

The day’s meeting ended with a ballpark BBQ (in ideal weather) and a California League game between the San Diego Padres Class A affiliate, Lake Elsinore Storm, and Tampa Bay’s affiliate, Bakersfield Blaze.  The Storm won 4-3.

DONATION RECEIVED FROM SABR for

SAN DIEGO SABR BASEBALL RESEARCH CENTER

and SAN DIEGO LIBRARY

In March, Vic Cardell, our city of San Diego Library liaison, confirmed that our Baseball Research Center (BRC) received a donation from SABR Acting Executive Director, John Zajc, consisting of 22 books and 42 serial issues published or prepared by SABR.  While not a complete collection of SABR-published materials it represents a majority of what has been published since SABR was founded.  We will continue to work to have a complete collection.

On behalf of the Library and its Director (Anna Tatar), Bruce Johnson, Supervisor, Art, Music & Recreation Section for the Library, wrote to Zajc on March 30th expressing thanks for the donation.  In the letter he noted that “ together we plan to build a superior collection of baseball research materials in San Diego.”

NEW BOOKS ON PADRES

HIT BOOK SHELF

Chapter member, Joe Naiman, along with David Porter (Professor of History at William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa), have combined to author a new book on the history of the National League Padres called The San Diego Padres Encyclopedia.  Quoting from the USA Today Baseball Weekly of March 20-26, 2002, which included it in its list of the best books this season, “What catches the eye about this title is that such a book exists at all.”  However, the review notes that the authors “have catalogued many of San Diego’s sunnier moments, including the team’s pennant-winning seasons of 1984 and ’98.”  It will be available in bookstores this spring, as well as via Amazon and Barnes & Noble web sites.

The San Diego Padres 1969-2002: A Complete History has recently been published, authored by Nelson Papucci.  “From the ’68 expansion draft to Tony’s final at bat.  A must-read for any Padre fan!”  Available by calling 1-800-431-1579 or through http://www.PadreBook.com.

“Thanks so much for the great Buzzie Bavasi stuff.  They are both wonderful additions to our Library.”

SAN DIEGO PADRES

BOX SCORE SCRAPBOOK PROJECT

Author and member Bill Swank has received the collection of Whitey Wietelmann's scrapbooks.  Bill notes:

“Beginning in 1969, Whitey clipped EVERY box score and pasted them onto pages in loose leaf binders.  He stopped at the end of the 1993 season when he was released by the Padres.  I am in the process of laminating the 1969 pages and making a new binder…I am making a 2002 box score scrapbook, but 8 seasons are missing.  How many SABR members would be willing to go to the library and copy old box scores?  If enough people helped, it would not be such an overwhelming task.  I wonder how many teams have a scrapbook with the box score of EVERY game they have played?”

If interested please call or e-mail Bill at wgswank@sgmmail.com, (858) 274-7999.
